Training opportunities at St Andrews
The
Practice is run from a purpose built modern medical centre, by three
GP’s.St Andrews is situated in Eccles, which lies at the border of
Salford and Trafford.
Our practice area takes in the relative
affluence of Ellesmere Park and Worsley, but also the poorer areas of
Winton, Peel Green and Barton.
As such we offer an excellent cross section of experience, especially
bearing in mind the high prevalence of chronic disease in the more
deprived populations we serve. For those of you who like a bit of retail
therapy, the Trafford Centre is but 5 minutes away, you could even get
some skiing in on the way home !! We have a list of approximately 4600,
and our consultation rates are on a par with the national average.
Out of Hours demand is also about average, and appears to be dropping.
On call experience is now largely delivered by attending sessions in Salford’s Out Of Hours Centre, based at Hope Hospital.
The practice has a long history of Training, one of the two longest
established training practices in Salford, and has taken medical
students and Registrars for many years.
It was one of few pilot sites that offered PRHO training
opportunities in GP, and one of the first to offer training to SHO’s.
We also have an association with Practice Nurse training extending over 10 years.
There is therefore an enthusiasm and working structure which encourages
training, and maximises the opportunities to deliver it.The Practice
has recently been visited and has been re-accredited for training for a
further three years.
We are a three Doctor practice that currently offers both ST1-2 and Registrar placements.
The Registrar has their own personal consulting room, and there is a truly extensive practice library
Our new partner Dr Tasker has completed appropriate courses for ST1 and ST2 supervision
Both Drs Budden and Sutherland are accredited trainers and share
training responsibilities, with Dr Sutherland assigned lead
responsibility
We have never failed to attract young Doctors to our practice and have
an excellent record of both satisfaction and exam success.
Having had both Registrars and PRHO’s/more recently ST1s, training
together over the past six years has added an extra dimension with the
creation of a “little firm” of sorts, which has enhanced our enjoyment
and the support for the two Doctors in training. The practice operates
from a new purpose built building with excellent facilities.
We are part of a larger administrative group of practices, which allows us to offer far more services to our patients.
This rather complex structure allows an excellent insight into the challenges of Practice Management.
We have two major treatment areas allowing services on site from
District Nurses, Chiropodists, a visiting Eye specialist and
physiotherapy. Attached services within the building include Health
Visitors, Community drug and alcohol workers and all members of the
Community Mental Health Team such as counsellors and psychologists.
This allows us to offer excellent “on-site” opportunities to observe
and learn from these professionals. We provide all aspects of modern GP
care including Diabetic and Chronic Disease clinics, joint injection
services and Minor Surgery.
Minor Surgery is provided by Dr Budden for the practice
Opportunities therefore exist to develop in these therapeutic areas,
and attendance at Minor surgery courses is encouraged. Each of the
partners has specific areas of interest and both are involved in
training both of our Doctors during their attachments.
Dr Sutherland is our lead trainer, and has a special interest in Family Planning, and provides acupuncture services for our clinical group
In addition to those areas listed above.
Dr Budden has an interest in teaching therapeutics and is the Prescribing Lead for our local Primary Care Trust.
He is also closely involved in the development of Practice Based Commissioning
He has excellent links with Accident and Emergency at Hope Hospital
where most of our Registrars do their VTS rotation. This allows us to
meet the Registrar in a working environment prior to their attachment,
and facilitates an excellent relationship between our practice and one
of our front line service providers.
Finally he is the Course Organiser for the RCGP NW faculty’s Diabetes course
Dr Tasker, our new partner, and lead for ST1 training, has a specialist interest in Mental Health
We are lucky to be served by an excellent team of five Practice Nurses
and a large team of receptionists, and indeed our Nurses continue to
develop into areas we could not have envisaged, even five years ago.We
believe that the environment we have created optimizes the training
opportunities whilst ensuring our training Doctors leave us with a
smile. We are always sad to see them leave.
